We are thrilled to announce an event with Apostolos Doxiadis taking place on Sunday 6th March from 6pm to 7.30pm. In his talk entitled "Modern Quest Myths: From Numbers to Stories", Apostolos Doxiadis will speak about his books Uncle Petros and Golbach's Conjecture and Logicomix, as an introduction to a discussion about their theme and forms. Given the concurrent thematic concerns of Doxiadis' books and his personal ventures into the relationship of mathematics to narrative and the topic of narrative intelligence, it seems fitting that his talk will engage with how the modern quest is mythologised in both mathematics and literature, showing they are connected and mutually dependant.

In both books Doxiadis uses the compelling narratives of two men's lives, tracing their heroic successes and human frailties, in order to introduce and explore some of the biggest ideas of mathematics and modern philosophy

Voilà du jamais-vu. Avec un choix graphique tout opposé, David Vandermeulen nous avait donné une biographie de savant, doublée d'un superbe exercice graphique dans Fritz Haber. Ici, il faut, avouons-le, passer par-dessus un dessin un tantinet vieillot pour entrer dans le projet, à vrai dire complètement fou, des deux scénaristes : transformer en roman graphique le destin de Bertrand Russell, ce logicien et mathématicien anglais aussi connu pour ses prises de position politiques - progressistes, pacifistes et, pour commencer, non conformistes - que pour sa contribution au débat entre logiciens autour de la théorie des ensembles (le "paradoxe de Russell", entre autres).

On voit l'ampleur de la gageure : rendre compte en fiction et, qui plus est, en fiction dessinée, de l'"aventure des idées". Les auteurs aggravent leur cas en entrecroisant au moins trois temps : celui d'une conférence donnée par Russell en 1939, un vaste retour en arrière sur l'ensemble de sa vie, le tout truffé de percées en avant sur les auteurs du roman, confrontés sans cesse à des problèmes de lisibilité et - c'est bien le moins - de logique... All comic books are about a hero’s journey. Each hero must travel the path destined for him, be it Superman, Batman, Maus or as is the case with Logicomix, Bertrand Russell. Sure, Russell was a mathematician, logician, philosopher, pacifist and historian whose theories are considered prescient, but to many other left-hemisphere intellectuals Russell was very simple, a hero with a quest to save the world from ‘the devils…contradiction and paradox’.

The German LOGICOMIX has hit the shelves!

Finnish LOGICOMIX to come out beginning of September, just before the Helsinki Comix Fest!

Apostolos spoke about LOGICOMIX to students and professors at the University of Cambridge in November 2009.  After his talk he was joined by Alecos Papadatos in answering the audience's questions.  The event was hosted by the Hellenic Society at Cambridge, and Apostolos was introduced by mathematician Tim Gowers.

Apostolos and Alecos were invited to speak about LOGICOMIX by the Post-Graduate Maths Society of the School of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham.

At their November 11th lecture, Apostolos spoke about his relationship with math, comics, and writing, and Alecos talked about the creative process in comics, and even gave the audience a demonstration of how he draws Bertrand Russell.

LOGICOMIX is awarded the Dutch Bookseller's Medal!

From the press release: On World Book Day 2010 ten non-fiction books will be awarded the Dutch Bookseller’s Medal (Lintje van de Boekverkoper). The winners of these yearly awards for quality non-fiction are chosen by a jury of booksellers. Most striking this year is the choice of a ‘graphic novel’, a form that is rapidly gaining popularity. The Royal Dutch Booksellers Federation will officially hand out the medals in a ceremony on Friday April 23rd.

It is a fantastic site with lots of samples of Alecos's animation, cartoons that appeared in newspapers, and hundreds of his drawings, from rough sketches and thumbnails to the final product.

LOGICOMIX was selected, along with 15 other books, to compete in the 2010 Tournament of Books, the winner of which will be awarded the Rooster Award, presented by Field Notes.

A description of the competition from the website: "Each spring we take 16 celebrated novels from the previous year and seed them into a competitive bracket like the kind used in the N.C.A.A. basketball championship. A group of judges is enlisted, and the tournament plays out over the course of five rounds of matches in March.
